A new range of tools for boring and precision boring features a modular ScrewFit adaptor and integrated imbalance compensation. According to Walter USA, this new series should guarantee top-quality precision boring. Available diameters range from 0.079-in. to 6.02-in.
Already proven through use in a wide range of milling tool applications, the Walter ScrewFit adapter is a highly stable and precise modular interface. The compact design of the connection enables the tools to be available in tooling diameters as small as 0.079 in., and as large as 2.76 in. The slim line dimensions also help increase the machining depth - for example 5- 6ý diameter is no longer a problem for small diameter boring. The tools are available in a twin-flute version for boring and a single-flute tool with adjustments for precision boring in the micron range. The two versions are inter-coordinated in diameter and tool length, so users can always find a suitable pair for combined boring and precision boring applications.
From a machining diameter of 1.3 in., the precision boring heads are fitted with an automatic imbalance compensation feature, making them self-balancing. A mechanism inside the tool is coupled with the insert holder adjustment. When the indexable insert holder is adjusted, a compensating weight is constantly displaced to allow an even distribution of weight ratio at all times. If the machining diameter is higher than 2.76-in., the ScrewFit thread is replaced by a NCT connection. The largest precision boring heads, which have a diameter range of 3.54-in. to 6.02-in., are made of aluminum to reduce the rotating mass.
Automatic imbalance compensation and a compact ScrewFit adaptor offer the following benefits: Automatic imbalance compensation eliminates the need to transfer tools to the balancing machine. ScrewFit tools require only a fork wrench for mounting. The maximum cutting speed is approximately 6,550ft/min for self-balancing precision boring tools. This not only results in shorter machining times, but also allows the tools to work with CBN and PCD cutting tool materials. The use of the ScrewFit adaptor reduces tool projection by approximately 30%. Not only is vibration reduced, but extremely narrow dimension and concentricity tolerances are achieved.
