SQUIGGLE motor - MRI-safe miniature motor

The patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor enables a new class of micro research tools, valves, and implantable or wearable drug pumps. The smallest motor, at 1.5 x 1.5 mm, has a position resolution better than 100 nm and pushes more than 20 grams, with up to 10 mm of travel. Larger motors are 7.3 mm dia and push loads of 500 grams, with 50 mm of travel. Speed is precisely controlled and variable from tiny steps to 10 mm/second. The ultrasonic SQUIGGGLE motors enable precise valve control, permitting more concentrated medications and smaller fluid reservoirs for dramatic reductions in overall device size. They hold position with the power off, preserving battery life in portable products. These tiny ceramic motors generate no magnetic fields and can be made of non-ferrous materials for use in and around MRI equipment.
