ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL-Redesign of the clamping base and extension slides on BIG Kaiser Precision Tooling's Series 317 large diameter boring system are among a series of improvements that will make the new system safer and easier to handle, the company announced.
The new, improved 317 large diameter boring system will be featured in BIG Kaiser's Booth E-2005 at IMTS 2004, September 8-15, in Chicago's McCormick Place. The new clamping system will enhance safety of operation at higher speeds. The new system will handle and set up easier and balance more precisely without using a balancing machine, according to Jack Burley, BIG Kaiser Vice President, Engineering.
In the new system, clamping bases, finish boring heads, or counterweights can be locked into one of two positions for stability and accuracy. The new system is completely interchangeable to existing tools, so users will not have to purchase all new components.
The 317 system is designed for heavy roughing or high precision finishing of large bore diameters from 5.91 inches to 46.46 inches. For roughing, a pair of insert holder bases and insert holders are mounted on the extension. The insert holders accept ISO standard carbide inserts. Each cutting edge can be individually adjusted for the stepped boring method by using shims located under the insert holders.
For finishing, the EWN precision finishing head is directly mounted on an extension from the 317 program. The boring head features a micrometric setting precision of .0005 inches on the diameter per dial gradation (inch head catalog No. 10.317.112) or ten microns (.01mm, metric catalog No. 10.317.102). The easy-to-read dial permits the user to split the gradations, providing extremely accurate and repeatable diameter corrections.
This modular system provides optimum rigidity while offering a cost-effective use of modular components. Kaiser's EWN finish boring system adapts to the standard 317 program, using existing slides, flanges, and extensions. For most applications, only the slide needs to be changed to adapt to a specific bore diameter. Each extension slide has an adjustment range over 2.75 inches in diameter and can be increased to over 4.75 inches by using the additional insert holders available for the EWN program.
Kaiser's locking system prevents any diameter shift under locking action force, assuring the operator of repeatable diameter precision. All tool movement is strictly radial, making length corrections required on angular mounted tools unnecessary. A patented safety device prevents the boring head or counterweight from being thrown off the slide by centrifugal force, even when clamp screws have been hand tightened.
Insert holders are designed for use with positive rake indexable inserts and use self-centering, center clamping insert screws, providing lower cutting forces and improved chip evacuation when compared to top clamping systems. Through spindle coolant capability is standard. The way the insert holder attaches to the boring head for finishing allows it to be easily turned around and used for back boring, making standard an operation that often required a special tool.
Diameter and height balancing of the cutting edges contribute to the 317's productivity and precision performance. BIG Kaiser's patented KAB connection insures the safe and positive high power transmission required for heavy roughing of large diameters.
The compact, rugged configuration of the large diameter boring system is ideal for use on production machines, such as boring mills and machining centers, with spindle taper sizes of 40 and larger.
