The Piezo LEGS LC20 Caliper Motor from MICROMO is designed for integration in linear or goniometer stages. Its extremely compact size and direct drive makes it ideal for high precision motorized stages. With this piezo motor solution, it is possible to fit your complete motion system inside the stage – no more bulky electrical motors and linear screws that are connected externally to the stage. The motor can also be fitted on the outsiide of a linear stage, making the use of longer drive rods possible for increasd travel range.
The LC20 Caliper Motor operates directly, without need for gears or mechanical transmission, to create a backlash free linear motion with nanometer or even sub-nanometer resolution. A conventional electric motor usually requires several assembled parts, such as rotor, stator, ball bearings, linear screws etc. to make it work. With the Piezo LEGS direct drive, the motor size is significantly reduced and precision is gained through the elimination of cumbersone mechanical parts. In the Piezo LEGS motors, multiple bimorph actuators are co-sintered to a single body with movable legs made out of ceramic “muscles.”
With nanometer resolutions, the LEGS technology is characterized by outstanding accuracy. High speed, quick response times and long service life are key benefits. The Piezo LEGS walking principle is of the non-resonant type (the positon of th edrive legs is known at any given moment). This assures very good control of the motion over the whole speed range. The performance of a Piezo LEGS motoris different from that of a DC or stepper motor. A Piezo LEGS motor is friction based, meaning that the motion is tranferred through control friction between the drive leg and the drive rod. Each step may not be equal to the next. This is especially true if the motor is operated under varying loads.
