Where Precision Meets Strength

DMG is positioning itself with the new HSC linear series as an innovation leader in 5-axis high-speed milling, and is setting itself apart as a cross-technology expert partner in a wide range of processes, covering the entire process chain and the full spectrum of materials and workpieces. This comprehensive and integrated product strategy is also the focus of an international HSC Roadshow, initiated by DMG under the slogan "Where precision meets strength" in cooperation with Siemens, Renishaw and Iscar.

DMG is positioning itself with the new HSC linear series as an innovation leader in 5-axis high-speed milling, and is setting itself apart as a cross-technology expert partner in a wide range of processes, covering the entire process chain and the full spectrum of materials and workpieces. This comprehensive and integrated product strategy is also the focus of an international HSC Roadshow, initiated by DMG under the slogan “Where precision meets strength” in cooperation with Siemens, Renishaw and Iscar.

When asked about the ambitions of the HSC Roadshow, Christian Thönes, Managing Director of SAUER GmbH explains: “DECKEL MAHO is the world market leader in 5-axis machining and has decades of experience in high-speed machining. In this context, the construction and expansion of a 5-axis HSC series was a logical step. However, in addition to the optimum machine, the customer needs an integrated technology concept as the basis of a closed link HSC process chain. Due to close cooperation with selected partners we can offer this process chain from a single source, from the CAM programming, the machine – including control, tool and clamping technology – to in-process quality assurance.”

Christian Thönes names three topics of his roadshow partners: The criteria for selecting the HSC tools for various materials and components; the use of measuring probes during set-up or checking the workpieces during the process; and issues concerning specific milling strategies and cycles within the CNC control system are explained in detail in specialist lectures and live presentations. “This clearly puts us in the lead in comprehensive machine and process technology.”

In this context, he names the distinctive features of the HSC linear series: the possibility of 5-axis simultaneous machining by integrated 4th and 5th axis, the linear drive with active cooling unit in X, Y and Z for acceleration of more than 2g and the water-cooled torque motors in the rotational axes. Further highlights of this series are:

  • High-frequency spindle with active cooling unit and temperature compensation with up to 42,000 rpm
  • New DMG Design with ERGOline Control with 19“ screen and 3D software
  • Thermo-symmetric gantry construction and monoblock design for maximum stability
  • Consistent control system philosophy with Siemens 840D solutionline and Heidenhain iTNC 530

Thönes concludes, referring to a further highlight of the HSC linear series that will be demonstrated during the roadshow, “Within the HSC series, the HSC 20 linear not only masters 5-axis high-speed milling to perfection, but offers, thanks to our HSK actuator system, the additional option of ultrasonic assisted drilling, milling and grinding in ultrasonic mode for advanced materials. We will implement this integral option as a world premiere for larger machines of the HSC linear series in time for EMO”. This offers several possibilities for the customer: machining a variety of soft, hard and brittle materials; machining the entire spectrum of workpieces with a uniform product line independent of component size; developing distinguishing features and future potentials by investigating new materials.
