Starrett Large Format Multi-Sensor Series

Five-model series comes with granite base, bridge for stability, air bearings, and linear motors.

Starrett Kinemetric Engineering Inc., a subsidiary of the L.S. Starrett Co., announces its “Large Format” LF Series of floor-standing CNC multi-sensor video metrology systems. The series consists of five models (LF313, LF463, LF713, LF963 & LF 1273) with X-Y travel ranging from 12” x 12” (300mm x 300mm) to 50” x 36” (1270mm x 915mm). Vertical travel is 8” (200mm) for all models.

Designed as high-end multi-sensor systems, all LF Series models come with a massive granite base and bridge for stability, air bearings, and linear motors for the X-axis and Y-axis, a 1/2" CCD color camera for video edge detection, 6.5:1 or 12:1 Navitar zoom optics, and encoder scales for 4 µin (0.1 µm) resolution. Accuracy on all three axes is 2.5 µm + 5L/1000.

Multi-sensor options include a choice of Renishaw CMM touch probes, an Optimet laser probe, and a 4”
(100mm) rotary stage. The video probe, touch probe, and laser probe can be mounted simultaneously and be invoked as needed via multi-sensor 3D metrology software for maximum measurement flexibility on the same part.

Video measurement, which is standard, is best for edge detection. A CMM touch probe is suitable for surfaces that can be vertical or inclined and be probed at different heights. The laser probe adds the ability to measure 3D contours at up to 800 samples/sec, to measure soft, reflective, and translucent surfaces (such as plastics), and to measure deep, narrow slots, grooves, and blind holes.

Processing for the LF Series is provided by a built-in PC that operates under Windows 7. Heidenhain QC5000 multi-sensor 3D software seamlessly integrates the operation of all probe types and supports CNC operation for repetitive measurement tasks. A workstation is standard and houses the system computer and CNC drive electronics. The main operator display is a 24” (61cm) color monitor, which displays the parts image, geometrical constructs, and data.

As an alternative to QC5000 multi-sensor software, the LF Series systems now offer a 21” all-in-one touch screen PC that runs MetLogix M3 software under Windows 7 for those applications that require video only measurements.

The basic M3 metrology software supports 3-axis measurements and 2D geometrical constructs (points, lines, angles, rectangles, and slots) and corrections for level, skew, and datum origin. Intuitive operation is provided by touch screen operation with pinch, swipe, and touch.
