The Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center, Research and Development (OMIC R&D), along with partners at Portland Community College OMIC Training Center, recently hosted Supporting Women in Manufacturing Day 2024, welcoming approximately 130 students from local Oregon middle and high schools. This dynamic event aimed to inspire young women and other underrepresented demographics to explore the exciting possibilities within the manufacturing industry and pursue degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs.
The day was packed with engaging, hands-on activities designed to spark interest and provide practical insights into manufacturing careers. Industry partners such as JATC and HumanKind Homes played a vital role, offering interactive demonstrations and workshops that brought the world of manufacturing to life.
“It was great to see these students dive into this event with so much enthusiasm,” said Don Hendrickson, interim executive director of OMIC R&D. “Events like this are crucial for breaking down barriers and showing young women that a future in manufacturing and STEM is not only possible but exciting and rewarding. Providing opportunities like this gives these students a chance to find traction in entering the workforce and exploring meaningful careers.”
The students also had the unique opportunity to connect with OMIC R&D researchers, who shared their personal journeys into the workforce and their experiences in research and development. These inspiring conversations highlighted the diverse pathways available in manufacturing and the critical role women play in shaping the future of the industry.
Supporting Women in Manufacturing Day 2024 reflects OMIC R&D’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce while addressing the growing need for skilled professionals in manufacturing and STEM fields. By partnering with schools and industry leaders, OMIC R&D continues to create impactful programs that empower the next generation of innovators.
Located in Scappoose, Oregon, OMIC R&D partners with industry leaders, academic institutions, and government agencies to provide cutting-edge research, workforce development, and training opportunities that shape the future of manufacturing.
