Stuart, Florida – Level 3 Inspection LLC, a service provider of computer aided inspection (CAI) and dimensional layouts from high-accuracy 3D scanning, has invested in its own Smart Inspection Station (SiS) to meet the quick turnaround times needed for production jet engine parts inspection contracts the company has won based on the results delivery speed.
The patent-pending SiS was developed to meet the marketplace's need for advanced CAI results in-house at clients' operations for precision manufacturers who prefer not to outsource dimensional inspections, primarily for lead times and/or proprietary information reasons.
"Our high-accuracy 3D scanning and proprietary processes of advanced dimensional inspection, geometric analysis, and conformance reporting have been completely integrated and fully automated, then implemented into a cabinet that rolls on to the shop floor, plugs in to normal electrical power, and produces our excellent CAI results, with a non-technical operator, all in about 12 minutes," explained Bill Greene, CEO of Level 3 Inspection. "Each part or component is automatically scanned and analyzed to its own inspection requirements, including CAD model and blueprint, and the robust collection of results are reported in completely industry-compliant report forms, including the aerospace industry standard AS9102 form, or anything else the client may desire. These intelligent results can also be ported directly into Statistical Process Control systems when they are available," he added.
"We have been positively impressed with the speed, accuracy, and ease of use from our own SiS," said Scott McAfee, L3I's chief operating officer and chief engineer. "But it's the throughput that made the biggest impact on our business, because efficiency is so critical for our CAI services business. This SiS is more productive than we anticipated," added McAfee. "We're inspecting 20 to 30 jet engine parts each shift with our SiS and providing results with process feedback to our clients in very short delivery times."
Level 3 Inspections CAI process is capable of providing ±5µm accuracy and repeatability, for when that kind of performance is required. Their inspection laboratory is ISO 17025 accredited to that accomplishment.
Level 3 Inspection LLC, and its sister company, Smart Inspection Systems LLC, which provides automated integrated CAI measurement systems to perform Level 3 Inspection's proprietary CAI process on the shop floor, have distinguished themselves as master practitioners in this rapidly growing advanced 3D metrology field. "Today everything needs to be brought to market faster, so our clients really appreciate the 30% time savings we provide in any precision manufacturing process optimization. Working with 10,000-times more information than any other measurement method, we can readily help our clients make better precision parts, at lower cost, much faster, and with greater confidence. We do this by cutting iterations and scrap, saving months and (often) millions," stated Greene.
