Chicago, Illinois – Every CAM vendor, machine tool builder, and cutting tool supplierpromotes the importance of cutting optimization. But what is really meant by optimization? This presentation will provide an analytic overview of the different types, with special focus on whichoptimization techniques are best suited for different materials or machining processes. It will also introduce attendees to a new physics-based optimization method that determines the maximum reliable feed rate for a given cutting condition based on the following four factors: force on the cutter, spindle power, maximum chip thickness, and maximum allowable feed rate.
Key points:
- Define several types of optimization software, and verify the value of optimizing NC program feed rates
- Identify multiple methods for optimizing NC program feed rates
- Explore automated ways to simplify the process of optimizing NC program feed rates
- Show how to calculate ideal feed rates by analyzing chip thickness and cutting forces on the tool
About the speaker
Gene Granata has been with CGTech as the technical support manager for VERICUT software since 1992. He has more than 27 years of CNC manufacturing experience. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in NC Manufacturing Technology from Northern Illinois University in 1983, his professional career began at Bendix Aerospace (now known as Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies) as a CNC programmer for a variety of CNC lathes, mills, and multi-tasking machines. He then went to work for aerospace companies such as Northrop Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft, working on T45, F20 and F18 fighter projects, as well as B2 Stealth Bomber and C17 military transport aircraft. In Granata’s role as technical support manager for CGTech, he has written technical documentation, designed many general-purpose and customized training courses, and provided manufacturing consulting services to hundreds of companies in virtually every industry, in addition to managing a team of dedicated technical support engineers.
