In manufacturing, human inspectors are often relied upon to approve the correctness of parts based on their surface as well as internal characteristics. These inspectors must approve both cosmetic and functional characteristics on shapes ranging from simple geometries to complex free-formed surfaces while also evaluating them by gauging the severity of any irregularity that is found. In addition to surface defects, inspectors may also be asked to validate internal material characteristics such as porosity, cavities, or cracks imaged by X-rays or ultrasound. The end decision, however, is made based on human perception. The human visual inspection continues in manufacturing today because a human’s adaptive interpretation allows flexibility where standard vision systems fail, even though the human inspection process remains highly subjective and inconsistent between inspectors. This can be problematic for manufacturing since even the smallest variations in curvature or blemishes can result in a nonfunctional or cosmetically unappealing part.
Automated in-line inspection of surface as well as internal defects is becoming more feasible. New methods such as phase shifted deflectometery or high speed computed tomography, aided by smart software capable of adapting to ever changing defect form and shape, is allowing the replacement of human subjectiveness with the consistency and accuracy of calibrated and stable technology platforms. These systems are capable of assessing both glossy and matte parts, as well as single or assembled components for internal defects or alignments.
This presentation will address new capabilities in process control as well as final quality control which are now possible.
