United Airlines is the first U.S. carrier to fly commercial passengers on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, from Houston, TX, to Chicago, IL, where a raucous crowd awaited the landing.
Aviation enthusiasts, United employees, journalists, and regular passengers were among the mixed group to fly, according to USA Today, and the enthusiasm for the flight stayed with them after the plane landed.
"The flight was so much fun, it had a party atmosphere," says passenger Kris Van Cleave. "(United CEO Jeff) Smisek must have talked to every passenger on the flight, people were out of their seats the entire flight."
After a difficult summer, Smisek says he hopes the new Dreamliner will bring back some momentum to United.
"The reality is we were not reliable in June and July," he tells Bloomberg News. "We lost some valuable customers. We're in the process of earning them back."
