The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) has honored Northrop Grumman Corp. with its Excellence in Aircraft Manufacturing 2012 Worker Safety Award.

The AIA award program recognizes companies' efforts to provide safe workplaces. Northrop Grumman earned top honors for the Aircraft Manufacturing category.

AIA presented awards based upon four key factors: number of total recordable injury cases, number of days-away-from-work cases, number of lost workdays, and total man-hours worked. Northrop Grumman achieved top scores across its Aerospace Systems manufacturing facilities in El Segundo, Mojave, Palmdale and San Diego, Calif.; Melbourne and St. Augustine, FL; Bethpage, NY; Moss Point, MS; and New Town, ND This is the second such award for the company in as many years, and the third in the past five years.

"We're honored once again to receive this award from AIA," says Gary W. Ervin, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "Providing our employees with a safe work environment is a part of our culture, and a commitment we will not waver from."

In 2005, Aerospace Systems leadership established a multiyear goal to reduce recordable injuries, and achieved a reduction of 45% by 2011 while lowering costs related to injuries by more than $50 million. In 2011, the sector expanded this goal to include a new challenge to reduce the severity of workplace injuries and decrease lost workdays. Top executives, site managers and employee teams routinely monitor progress. Findings, trends and corrective actions are communicated openly and regularly throughout the organization.
