High Capacity Torque Limiter

The ST2 makes use of a vibration damping jaw type coupling in conjunction with an accurate and easily resettable torque limit function.

Integrating a mechanical torque limiter into a high horsepower driveline normally means modifying or purchasing a customized flexible coupling, or fabricating a shaft adapter to allow for a standard coupling to be used.

The new ST2 series from R+W allows for one compact unit to be installed, saving space and cost.  This can be critical when considering that mechanical torque limiters are often implemented after the original equipment has been designed or installed, putting space at a premium.  The ST2 makes use of a vibration damping jaw type coupling in conjunction with an accurate and easily resettable torque limit function.  After reaching the preset disengagement value (from 738ft/lb – 118,000ft/lb) the coupling fully disengages and freely rotates over a high strength internal bearing until the machine shuts down; helping to avoid damage to gearboxes, shafts, etc due to overload.

Resetting the coupling involves snapping the individual plungers back into engagement with a pry bar or mallet.  These safety couplings have 4 body sizes and anywhere from 3 to 9 plungers, depending on the torque setting.  The adjustable plungers can then be added or removed after installation in case of miscalculation of the release torque value.  Also available as a pure torque limiter or with integral gear coupling or disc coupling, the ST can be viewed at:
