U.K. budget carrier easyJet PLC said Friday it is teaming up with an inventor to test a radar that could help pilots avoid clouds of volcanic ash.
EasyJet Chief Executive Andy Harrison said the airline is working with plane manufacturer Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co., to test the technology on A340 aircraft and, depending on those results, could roll out the radar on 12 easyJet planes by the end of the year.
"This is a huge step forward," said Mr. Harrison. "This pioneering technology is the silver bullet that will make large-scale ash disruption history."
