The state-owned Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco), with the support of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was on the process to identify a suitable location for the multi-million project and it has become successful now, industry experts said.
The proposed park, which would attract investments of Rs450 billion and generate over 100,000 jobs, will put the state on the global aerospace map. According to the policy note tabled in the state assembly after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government took over in 2011, the Tidco was scouting for land for the Project.
“Now we have suggested about 250 acre land near the old Chennai airport and another 800 acre land close to the new airport.” CII-Tamil Nadu Manufacturing and Services Task Force Co-Chairman Venkatesh Chandrasekaran said.
“We have given the study report to Tidco. The report and the draft policy on aerospace park is currently with the government”, he says.
The Larsen and Toubro-Ramboll has been appointed as consultant to carryout the feasibility study and marketing assistance for the project, he said.
Aeronautical Development Agency and DRDO Chair Dr Kota Harinarayana said the aerospace park would provide a significant growth to the state, as Tamil Nadu was one of the strongest markets for the auto-component industry.
“We have not grown to the extent we need to grow. Currently, 85% of aviation capacity is generated from Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. But the aviation park can give the boost required to growth”, he says. Southeastern state Andhra Pradesh was the first to set up an aerospace park in Hyderabad followed by Karnataka, which recently alloted 1,000 acres of land in Bangalore for the park.
Global Aerospace Industrial Hub
A global aerospace park, which will manufacture and assemble aircraft, will be set up in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
