Rock West Composites Opens Precision Assembly Division

This new division is dedicated to providing high quality assembly services to manufacturers of precision composite components.

Rock West Composites announces the opening of its new Precision Assembly Division at its facility in West Jordan, UT. This new division is dedicated to providing high quality assembly services to manufacturers of precision composite components - at an overall cost that is competitive with off-shore operations.

Rock West Composites is a composite manufacturing company, with a team experienced in advanced composite materials and processes. We understand that “high value” composite components often are achieved using expensive special skilled labor and capital intensive facilities. However, the final assembly processes of these components often do not require the same high cost facilities and yet can suffer the burden of those high overhead costs. Rock West Composites provides the unique combination of high tech composites knowledge and low cost assembly services. This capability will be provided in a purpose built, cost controlled facility and organization with over 45,000ft² of manufacturing space.

You don’t need to go off-shore to reduce your assembly costs. Along with our staff who know composites, we provide the additional benefits of lower risk, reduced customer investment, simpler logistics, no tariffs, and no special physical security.

“I believe our new Precision Assembly division offers many unique advantages to our current and prospective customers. The idea of offering a lower cost alternative for assembly operations to our customers without the risk and high investment cost of dealing with off-shore companies, should resonate well”, says Jim Gormican, Rock West CEO.
Dave Erickson, Rock West VP and General Manager noted, “Our approach at Rock West Composites has always been to offer very competitive labor rates by running as lean as possible, incorporating highly skilled and experienced technicians with minimal overhead cost. We have accomplished this through tight organization, clear objectives, employee efficiency incentives, and paperless document control / work instructions. We acknowledge and embrace the competitive pressure from off-shore and believe we offer a true value advantage while keeping it “Made in the USA”. Assembly work is quite often something our customers do in-house because they “are required to”. The problem with this scenario is that resources are allocated ineffectively instead of being utilized for higher value work. Our vision is to offer a lower cost option plus free-up capacity for our customers so they can focus on what they do best.”

Thomas Sorenson will run the Precision Assembly Division. Tom comes to Rock West Composites with over 20 years of experience in composite manufacturing and precision assembly, servicing aerospace and commercial customers. In his most recent position, he managed F-35 composite structures and assemblies for a top ten defense manufacturer. Prior positions saw Tom start a successful aviation company specializing in assembly of avionics wiring for General Aviation and business aircraft. He also worked at a Utah based composites manufacturer where he supplied several industries with composite structures. Additionally, he is a veteran of the United States Navy and an accomplished private pilot.

“Tom and I have worked together before and I’m excited to be reunited with him. We had many successes working together previously. We’ve both gained significant experience since then, and we look forward to providing a competitive advantage to our customers”, says Dave Erickson.
